Two health and safety appointments that'll change the way you manage your company's health and safety

by , 18 August 2014
Health and safety isn't just your responsibility as the owner of your company.

Yes, you must know what's going on because at the end of the day you make the final decisions, but you can appoint members of staff to positions to support and help you in your health and safety efforts.

In fact, by making these two appointments in your company, you can share the weight of your health and safety programme. This means it'll run better and your employees will be safer.

So get out your appointment letters and appoint these two people...

The first appointment you must make is your section 16.2 appointment

This is the appointment of your safety officer. He becomes the person who manages the day-to-day aspects of your health and safety programme. He must be on site and watch the way your employees work to ensure they work safely.

He must enforce your health and safety rules and do some of the admin when it comes to documenting accidents and other aspects of your health and safety.

You'll share some of these responsibilities with your safety officer and together you can run your health and safety programme.

The next appointment you must make must go to a vote first.

The second health and safety appointment you must make is your section 17 appointment

This appointment is for your health and safety representative. He's someone your employees elected through a vote. If he accepts the position, you can appoint him as your official health and safety rep.

His role is to be the voice for all of your employees. You must involve him in matters such as risk assessments and committee meetings. After all, he knows more about what your employees deal with on a daily basis than you do.

So make these two appointments today! You really can't run or manage your company's health and safety effectively without them.
