Warning! If you don't follow health and safety regulations, one of your employees will die! (It may not be today, or even tomorrow, but it will happen...)

by , 30 April 2014
15% of all fatal work accidents happen on construction sites because employers don't follow OHS regulations. 15% may not sound like a lot, but imagine you're responsible for one of those deaths. You'd have to stop work and you might have to shut your business down. You'd also face damages claims from the victim's family. But worst of all you'd need to live with the death on your conscious. Thankfully, you can avoid all of this if you simply follow these important points of the OHSA.

*************************
Do you want to be fined, jailed or have a criminal record for life?

If an accident occurs in your workplace, and the person dies, you could be charged with culpable homicide, charged penalties of R100 000 or 2 years in jail! The CEO or Owner of a company is personally accountable for health and safety at work.

Ensure you follow these three important safety regulations outlined by the OHSA

All of the OHSA is important but there are certain safety regulations you, as a construction employers, must remember.

Firstly: You have to do a full risk assessment. Section 8 of the OHSA says it's your responsibility to make sure the working place is safe.
This includes managing possible risk, fixing equipment and using measures to protect your employees. To do all of this, you must do a risk assessment and have a risk management plan.

Secondly: According to section 8 (2) (d) it's your responsibility to provide safety measures that fit the work done by your company. For a construction site, this includes providing the correct PPE. As we've discussed, the construction industry has the highest number of fatal head injuries. This means that it's your responsibility to give hard hats as the most important piece of PPE on your site.

Thirdly: Section 8 (2) (i) states that it's your responsibility to appoint a safety officer or supervisor. You must train this person to understand safety risks and to deal with them.

This essential tool guarantees your construction site will always be fully compliant with the DoL's new construction regulations...

If your site fails to comply with just one of the 26 DoL construction regulations, it could result in an incident that leaves dozens of people injured or even dead!

Make sure your employees are informed about safety regulations

The OHSA also says you must display your health and safety policy and make sure employees understand it. Your safety office must help you enforce your health and safety policy and make sure employees follow it.

So stop one of your employees from joining the 15%. Simply follow these important OHSA points to the letter.
