Your safety officer: Your greatest ally in keeping your employees safe

by , 22 August 2014
The hardest part of health and safety is often getting your employees to follow the rules. They forget to follow procedures, they don't wear PPE and they may behave badly.

But luckily, you have an ally who can help you with this. This is the one person who's on site to watch your employees and ensure they stick to the rules.

This person is your safety officer - here's why he's your greatest ally when it comes to keeping your employees safe...

Here's why your safety officer is such an important ally

You can't be on site to watch your employees every second of the day. That's why it's so difficult to ensure your employees comply with your rules.

But your safety officer can be on site and as part of his duties, he must watch your employees. If he sees they're not following your health and safety rules he must remind them to do so. If they still don't follow the rules, he must remind them that they'll face discipline for ignoring the rules. If they still refuse to work by the rules, he must report them to you for discipline.

Your employees probably won't want to be disciplined so they're more likely to comply and follow the rules.

But your safety officer can help ensure your employees comply in another way.

Here's another way your safety officer can ensure your employees comply with health and safety rule

Your safety officer can also try to find out why your employees don't want to comply with the rules. It could be because they don't have the right training or they don't understand what to do. Or maybe they don't feel that your rules keep them safe.

Your safety officer can then help improve your health and safety programme so your employees will follow it better.

So ensure your safety officer fulfils these duties to keep your employees safe at work.
