There are five types of employees COID doesn't cover for occupational injury or disease

by , 11 September 2014
Did you know: COID doesn't cover every type of employee? There are certain employees who can't get compensation at all or who have to go through other channels.

If you try to claim for these employees, it'll just be a waste of time for you and the Compensation Commissioner.

To ensure you don't make that mistake, we're revealing the five types of employees COID won't cover for occupational injury or disease...

These are the employees COID won't cover

COID covers most employees, but not all of them. These are the five it doesn't cover:

1. Domestic workers at a private home
Currently Domestic Workers can't get compensation but there is talk of Government revising the COID Act so it covers Domestic Workers.

2. Workers who don't work under employers
This means if you're self-employed and run a business on your own, you can't get workmen's compensation. The reason for this is it becomes too easy for people to cause accidents and say they were doing work for their business to get compensation.

3. Employees who work outside of South Africa for more than 12 months at a time.
If you travel a lot or live outside the country for your work and you have an injury there, COID won't pay you any injury compensation.

4. Members of the South African National Defense Force (SANDF)
The SANDF has its own fund it can claim from.

5. The Police Services
They also have a separate fund and can't claim from COID.

You can't get around the system and try to get compensation for employees COID doesn't cover. So don't try or it'll be a waste of your time.

PS: We strongly recommend you check out the COID Compliance Guide. It has everything you need to fully comply with the COID Act.
