Are you implementing these three fire safety measures?

by , 20 June 2013
Did you know fires are more common in winter than summer? This is because a lot more electricity is used. They can spark when you least expect it and cause terrible damage to your property and put your employees at risk.

Here are three fire safety measures that'll protect your business from a heated problem!

Are you implementing these three fire safety measures?

Fire safety signs are a must have

One of the simplest measures you should train your employees on is fire safety signs. When we moved into our new building I didn't have a clue where to find the fire extinguisher! What's more, I noticed safety signs I'd never seen before. It was only when the email went round about it that I noticed the various signs and understood what they meant. Similar to my situation, it's easy not to notice the most obvious things, like a fire safety sign right outside the boardroom door! If a fire happened in your workplace, your employees will respond to escape the fire when they recognise the safety signs!

Everyone must know how to use a fire extinguisher

Another measure is how to use the fire extinguisher. If you had to ask your employees, 'Do you know how to use a fire extinguisher?' How many would answer yes? Sadly in an emergency, the fire won't wait on you to Google search how to use a fire extinguisher in five simple steps! When a fire sparks, you'll have two choices; figure out how to use an extinguisher and battle it out or you'll have to escape and hope the fire brigade arrives in time to salvage what's left! Make sure everyone knows how to use a fire extinguisher.

The last measure you'll implement to ensure fire safety in your workplace is…

Conduct fire drills

Regular fire drill practices are the best way to ensure your employees evacuate unharmed if a fire breaks out. Fire safety starts when your employees know what your emergency response plan is. Practise safety drills twice a year, as mandated by law, and keep a record of safety practices in your SHE file. So schedule your next fire drill to test your emergency evacuation – you'll be glad you did if a fire breaks out.

Do you know the answer to these fire safety questions?
  1. Are fire drills compulsory?
  2. What quantity of flammable liquid would be considered to require special storage facilities?
