Eight things you must have to comply with the OHS Act

by , 07 October 2014
Complying with the OHS Act is about more than just keeping your workplace tidy. You need to have the right items.

These aren't just any items though. These are the documents and equipment you need to ensure your company is 100% compliant with the law.

To ensure you have everything you need, we're revealing eight things you must have so the DoL doesn't accuse you of not complying with the OHS Act...

Comply with the OHS Act by having these eight items

1. Your health and safety policy. This gives guidelines you and your employees must follow when it comes to health and safety, as well as the rules.

2. Your health and safety plan. This gives the breakdown of how you implement health and safety in your workplace.

3. A copy of the OHS Act somewhere all your employees can see it and read it. The easiest way to do this is to put up this wall chart.

*Knock knock* The Labour Inspector arrives unannounced… are you ready?

If you operate any machinery in your workplace, GMR Schedule D or C must be in clear view for employees to see. This will be the first thing the inspector will look out for when he's paying an unscheduled visit to your workplace.  If you are missing these summaries, he will slap you with a fine. Don't get caught without them.

4. Your health and safety procedural manual. This is an important document because it gives your employees the exact procedures they must follow to work safely.

5. Safety equipment. You must put this anywhere your employees have to work with dangerous equipment or in unsafe environments.

6. Personal protective equipment (PPE). You must have this so you can give it to your employees to help them prevent injuries.

7. A first aid kit. The OHS Act says you must have first aiders and that you must have a first aid kit. You must keep this full of all the items the DoL requires you to have.

8. Emergency fire equipment. Fire extinguishers are a vital piece of safety equipment you must have in your company.

Ensure you always have these eight items in your workplace to help you comply with the OHS Act.
