Forward to your first aider: The top three first aider responsibilities

1.     Control an injury or illness of a co-worker

This is most important function of a first aider. They're the first point of call to give treatment.  There is a caution though. Your first aider must work within their level of training and understanding. If your first aider isn't skilled enough to handle the injury, they must consult with a professional immediately. Their responsibility ends when the worker is handed over to the health care personnel.

2.    Ensure the treatment register is up to date

A record of the injured or ill workers and the treatment given by the first-aider must be kept. You must keep this record for five years. You'll find a template of the Treatment Register in F02, Appendix 2 of the Health and Safety Training Manual. It includes details about the incident such as how and when it happened. It'll also include the contact details that are needed for the injured worker and witnesses.

3.    Maintain your first aid box

Your first-aider must maintain the first-aid box. They should check it often and ensure the contents are re-stocked. But this doesn't excuse you as the employer if something is missing from the first aid box. The absolute duty to look after first-aid facilities lies with you. So ensure the first aid box has all you need for your workplace. Do you know the list of items you need in a first aid box? If you're unsure, you'll find it here.
