If your employees use material hoists, make sure they comply with safety requirements set out in Construction Regulations 2014

by , 18 March 2014
The Department of Labour has made changes to the Construction Regulations. The bad news is that failure to comply with the regulations will result in harsh penalties. Don't take that risk! Make sure you comply with these five safety requirements if your employees use material hoists.

In this article, we gave you four safety requirements for material hoists. We're now going to give you additional safety requirements so you can fully comply with Constructions Regulations 2014.

Construction Regulations 2014: Here are five more safety requirements for material hoists

#1: The South African Forum of Civil Engineering Contractors explains that, in terms of Construction Regulations 2014, you (the contractor) may not require or permit any person to operate a hoist, unless the person is competent in the operation of that hoist.

#2: You're not allowed to permit any person to ride on a material hoist.

#3: Construction Regulations 2014 state that a contractor must ensure that every material hoist is:

  • Inspected on daily basis by a competent person. You must have appointed this person in writing. He must also have experience when it comes to putting up and doing maintenance on material hoists or similar machinery.
  • Properly maintained and the maintenance records in this regard are kept on site.

Here are two more safety requirements you must comply with if you use material hoists

#4: You (contractor) must put up a notice that indicates the maximum mass load which may be carried at any one time and the prohibition of persons from riding on the platform of the material hoist. This notice must be placed around the base of the tower and at each landing.

#5: Construction Regulations 2014 also require you to ensure that the platform of every material hoist is designed in a manner that allows it to carry the load safely. And that the combined mass of the platform and the load doesn't exceed the designed lifting capacity of the hoist.

Now that you know all the safety requirements for material hoists, make sure you comply with Construction Regulations 2014.
