Knock Knock! It's the DoL Inspector! Will you pass a health and safety inspection this year?

by , 28 June 2013
If the Department of Labour didn't knock on your door in 2011 and in 2012, you best believe they're coming in 2013! But if you're like most companies you know you need to comply with health and safety law but you're unsure of where to start or what to look out for.

There are thirteen checks the DoL inspector will look for. Here's a rundown of what they are so you'll pass your inspection!

Do you have all 29 essential health and safety inspection checklists?

Your inspection checklist is your first step towards full compliance. Without it, your health and safety policy won't be legally compliant.
You have your health and safety policy drawn up, but how often do you check that your employees comply? The easiest way is to have a set of inspection checklists you can use each time you need to check that your safety measures meet the requirements of your risk assessment.

The first thing you need to make sure of is that you're registered with the Compensation Fund. You can contact the DoL to get the form you need to submit! Make sure you keep proof that you've registered in your SHE file! When they come knocking on your door you can pull it out with confidence.
Secondly, make sure you have the Occupational Health and Safety Act and other Regulations relevant to your site on display. These documents must be available to your workers. If you don't have these legal summaries, you can get them here!

In April I told you how to appoint an HSE Rep and what their duties are on your site. If you didn't read that article, I suggest you do that now! There are five duties your HSE Rep must perform. Make sure you know what they are!

There's more you need to look out for so keep reading to find out what they are!

Can you answer yes to these DoL inspection checks?
When the DoL inspector comes round to your site, he'll also check for these ten things. Can you answer yes to all of them?
  1. Are you registered with the Unemployment Insurance Fund?
  2. Are you and your workers trained to recognise health and safety problems? Such as;
  • Are moving parts like drive belts and chains guarded?
  • Are chemicals used safely and stored in a safe place?
  • Are all electrical wires insulated and proper plugs used in your workplace?
  1. Are emergency exits clearly marked and easily accessible?
  2. Are fire extinguishers accessible and serviced regularly?
  3. Do you have fully equipped first aid boxes on the premises?
  4. Have you established Health and Safety Committees in your workplace?
  5. Do you have fully equipped first aid boxes on the premises?
  6. Do you report injuries at work to the Department of Labour?
  7. Do you have clean and hygienic toilets and washing facilities provided for males and females?
  8. Do you have an attendance register at your workplace?
If you couldn't answer yes to all these questions, your company isn't complying. I understand you've enough on your plate already, and keeping up with paperwork isn't at the top of your to-do list. But it's a legal requirement. Use this list know how you can to answer 'YES' so you'll pass the DoL inspection with no trouble at all.
