by , 23 July 2014
You can't predict when a DoL inspector will arrive at your company to do a health and safety inspection. He has the right to enter any premises without permission of notification.

But you can predict what he'll check for. If you know what he's going to inspect, you can ensure your health and safety passes with flying colours.

So get prepared and stay one step of the DoL by using this 13 point checklist of the things the inspector will look at...

Checklist: The 13 things a DoL inspector will check during a health and safety inspection

A DoL inspector wants to check your level of compliance with OHS regulations. These are just some of the things he looks for to determine your compliance:

2. Have you registered with the Unemployment fund?
7. Do you have a health and safety committee?
8. Have you trained your employees to recognise health and  safety problems such as:

- Do you have guards for moving parts like driving belts and chains?
- Do you have a safe place to store chemicals and do your employees use them safely?
- Have you clearly marked your emergency exits and are they accessible?

9. Do you have a fully equipped first aid box on your premises?
10. Have you insulated all of the electrical wires in your workplace and do you have proper plug sockets?
11. Do you always report injuries at work to the DoL?
13. Do you have an attendance register at your workplace?

Now that you know what the DoL inspector will look for, ensure your workplace health and safety passes the inspection.

*Knock knock* The Labour Inspector arrives unannounced… are you ready?

If you operate any machinery in your workplace, GMR Schedule D or C must be in clear view for employees to see. This will be the first thing the inspector will look out for when he's paying an unscheduled visit to your workplace.  If you are missing these summaries, he will slap you with a fine. Don't get caught without them.
