'The Department of Labour inspector called today, out of nowhere... They'll arrive in two weeks for a health and safety inspection. I don't have a Occupational Health and Safety file and I've never had a Risk Assessment done. The Department of Labour said I could lose my business and face heavy penalties or even imprisonment if I don't pass the inspection.'

There're two things you need to do to ensure you pass an inspection! Two things don't seem like a lot but if you don't have them in place, you'll be like our reader who's facing the hot seat!
  1. Ensure you have a SHE File that's fully updated with all the relevant information the DoL will look for.
  2. Conduct a risk assessment to find out what risks could harm your employees and how you'll prevent it.
Your health and safety file (SHE file) is more than just a file stashed with copies of documents! Think of it as the holy grail of all your health and safety information. There are 18 items you're supposed to include such as appointment letters and inspection registers! Do you know the list of items that shouldn't be in your SHE file? When was the last time you did a risk assessment?
 
Did you double check the less obvious risks too? It's your legal obligation so there's no way to avoid doing it. I'm sure at some point you'll search online for a control measure that's easy to apply to solve your risk problem. But have you considered that you missed something last time?
