These two health risks could be the reason your company is forced to close its doors

by , 15 October 2014
The DoL isn't shy about shutting companies down if they don't comply with the OHS Act. And it could happen to you if you don't follow health and safety rules and keep your employees safe.

But it's not just dangerous machinery you need to protect your employees from, it's possible health risks too.

In fact, if your company poses these two health risks, the DoL will shut your doors...

Don't let the DoL find these two health risks in your workplace

Health risk 1: Mould
Mould is a common health risk in old buildings with bad ventilation. The reason for this is the air can't circulate properly and leads to excessive moisture.
This moisture causes mould to form and this can cause serious chest and lung infections.
If a DoL inspector finds a mould problem in your workplace, he'll shut you down until you deal with the problem.
Otherwise, your employees will continue to breathe in mould spores and get sicker and sicker.
Deal with this problem by creating proper ventilation in your workplace and fumigating it to kill off any mould.
Here's the second health problem that could shut you down.

Your 1 527 health and safety duties as an employer
When was the last time you checked what disinfecting agents and cleaning materials your company uses?
Do you comply with the Hazardous Chemical Regulations?
There are over 1 500 items you must evaluate in your workplace according to the OHS Act and hundreds more from SABS 0400: National Building regulations.

Health risk 2: Lead and other heavy metals

If you ingest lead, or any other heavy metal, it's toxic. If your workplace if full of any heavy metals, your employees could inhale, absorb or ingest, it poses a serious health risk.
This is another problem that's mostly present in older buildings. To ensure the DoL doesn't shut you down for this, upgrade your building's plumbing so it doesn't use lead pipes and ensure there's no lead paint on the walls.
Ensure these health risks don't exist in your workplace so you can avoid a DoL shut down.
