To avoid DoL penalties, look for these four things to look for during an internal health and safety inspection

by , 21 October 2014
Internal health and safety inspections can help you catch problems in your workplace. To do one of these inspections, you need to compare what you see with what's in your health and safety documents.

This way, you can find any deviations from your health and safety programme and fix them before a DoL inspector comes knocking. This will save you a lot of money that would have gone to paying DoL fines.

So, when you do your next internal health and safety inspection, look for these four things in your workplace...

Look for these four things during your next health and safety inspection

1. Damaged equipment
You must inspect your equipment to see what condition it's in. If it's damaged, it's not safe to use. That's why you must assess if you need to repair it or replace it.

Use your health and safety documents to check when last you did machine maintenance.

2. Ineffective safety equipment
It's important to identify any safety equipment that doesn't protect your employees. If you spot any equipment like this, replace it immediately.

Use your documents to determine when you last did a risk assessment to ensure your safety equipment is risk specific.

Are you responsible for compiling your SHE file?

Are you struggling to keep up-to-date with all the paperwork?
Do you waste your time formatting all the documents?
Are you stressed out about all your legal requirements?

Of course you are. You have enough on your plate already, and keeping up with paperwork isn't on the top of your to-do list.

But unfortunately, it's part of your job because it's a legal requirement. And, you've answered 'YES' to at least half of the questions above.

3. Dirty or untidy workplace areas
Poor health and safety housekeeping can lead to serious accidents.

Check your documents to see what procedures are in place when it comes to housekeeping. Also check who's in charge of keeping your workplace clean and tidy as they're not doing their job properly.

4. Employees who don't follow safety procedures
If you see any of your employees not following your safety procedures, it could spell big trouble. This is when your employees are most likely to have serious accidents and injuries.

Check your safe working procedures manual to see what they should do. Also check your training registers to find out when your employees last had training on these procedures.

Looking for these four things in your workplace during your health and safety inspection will ensure the DoL isn't the one that finds the problems.
