Watch out for these four signs of non-compliance in your construction site

by , 20 October 2014
The DoL will punish you if it finds out your construction company's guilty of non-compliance. The best way to prevent this is to ensure your company always complies.

To do that, you need to keep your eyes open for possible signs of problems and non-compliance.

So next time you're on your construction site, check for these four signs of non-compliance...

Four non-compliance signs you must watch out for in your construction company

1. Poor health and safety housekeeping
If your workplace is a mess, it's because of poor housekeeping. This is clear non-compliance as it violates the OHS Act's regulations around workplace environments.

This also suggests a problem with your company organisation and health and safety management. You must check what other areas, such as documents, routine inspections and equipment maintenance are in disrepair.

2. Damaged equipment
If your equipment is damaged, it could suggest employees misuse it and don't follow the correct procedures. This suggests blatant non-compliance from your employees or lack of training.

Do you want to be fined, jailed or have a criminal record for life?

If an accident occurs in your workplace, and the person dies, you could be charged with culpable homicide, charged penalties of R100 000 or 2 years in jail! The CEO or Owner of a company is personally accountable for health and safety at work.

3. Missing safety equipment
If there are pieces of safety equipment missing in your workplace, it suggests you haven't recently done a risk assessment or inspection to find out what new safety equipment you need. This could have other consequences such as your other equipment being ineffective.

4. MIA supervisors or safety officers
If your supervisors or safety officers are nowhere in sight, or they're disregarding their duties, it's clear non-compliance on their part.

If you spot any of these signs in your workplace, it's time to re-evaluate your health and safety. You can do a health and safety audit to determine the extent of your company's non-compliance so you can fix it.
