The SABC reports that two City of Tshwane Metro officials have less than a week to make written representations as to why they shouldn't be suspended. This after the officials received suspension notices on Friday.

According to the report, Tshwane Metro intends to suspend its chief financial officer Andile Dyakala and strategic executive director in the city manager's office, Tshilidzi Nemahagala.

Dyakala was fingered in a forensic probe relating to a printing tender, while Nemahagala faces charges of insubordination, harassment, intimidation, absenteeism without authorisation and dereliction of duty.

These high profile suspensions have once again cast the spotlight on suspension procedures in the workplace.

The only way to ensure suspension is fair is to follow these five steps

Suspension must be procedurally fair.

It doesn't matter what your employee has done. You must still give him an opportunity to be heard before you suspend him.

The best way to do this is to follow these five steps:

Step #1: Tell your employee in writing that you want to suspend him. You must give him a notice of intention to suspend.

Step #2: Tell him the reasons why you want to suspend him.

Step #3: Invite him to make representations before you decide to suspend him.

Step #4: Consider his representations.

Step #5: Inform him of your final decision and give reasons. If you decide to suspend, you must issue a notice of suspension.

When you've done all of this, it means you've given your employee an opportunity to be heard. And this means your suspension has been procedurally fair.
