In terms of the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA), you're required to give your employees health and safety induction training. It's vital that your employees are aware of the hazards they're exposed to and what measures are in place to protect them from these hazards, says the Health and Safety Advisor.
But do you know the different types of employees in your workplace who must be given health and safety induction training?
The following employees must receive health and safety induction training
#1: New employees must be given induction training since they're at a greater risk of injuring themselves at work than existing staff.
#2: Employees who return to work after a long absence (like maternity leave) must be retrained on your health and safety policies. These employees must also be trained incase new procedures were introduced while they were away.
#3: Employees who've moved into different roles must be retrained just in case they're not familiar with new procedures.
#4: External contractors who work on your site must be trained on health and safety policies. This'll ensure they're aware of the company's rules when on site, but most importantly, it'll protect you from any Compensation for Occupational Injuries and Diseases (COID) claims if there are any accidents on site.
Ensuring that these employees receive health and safety induction training will help employees work safely in their environments.
In addition, by providing all the necessary training, you can also avoid potential costly COID claims, which could be instituted if your employees aren't aware of your health and safety policies.
