Three reasons it's crucial you do safety induction training when new employees join your company

by , 19 January 2015
If you want your company to grow, hiring new employees is an essential step. But it also brings with it a lot of admin before you can be sure they can work well in your company.

Part of this admin is safety induction training. This is a fundamental part of bringing new employees into your workplace safely.

Now some employers just shrug it off as an unimportant part of training that they'll deal with later.

This is a big mistake and one you should never make.

Keep reading to find out three reasons why safety induction training is a crucial part of bringing new employees into your company...

Make sure you include safety induction training as part of your employee enrolment for these three reasons

1. It's a legal requirement
The OHS Act says you have to give all your employees health and safety training. It's not enough to do this training later on when you have time. You have to train all your employees as they join your company.
This way, they can start work knowing exactly how to do so safely.
Make sure your induction training covers all your safety procedures in detail.

Can an HSE officer do induction training?
According to the OHSA, you must do induction training for new employees, external contract workers, even employees returning from maternity leave. And every time there's new legislation, or if you have a new safety process or equipment.
It sounds like you could be doing induction every month! And who has the time to create proper training material? And ensure its correct?
So, I did some research to see what Induction training is available to make your job easier.
2. It will save you money
If you don't train your new employees and one of them has an accident, it could be because of your negligence.
After all, you didn't train your employee and that could be why he had his accident. If this happens, COID could make you pay your employee extra compensation.
So rather train your employee and save your money for other more important uses. Just don't forget to make your employee sign an attendance register to show he attended and finished his training. This way he can't claim you didn't train him just to get more compensation.
3. It will increase your company's productivity
If you make your new employee start work without training, he'll stop every five minutes to ask his supervisor what to do to. This means it will take weeks before he'll actually be able to do the work you hired him to do.
Rather train your new employees first so they know exactly what to do. This way they won't need to ask as many question and they can really get into their jobs sooner. Therefore, increasing your company's productivity with the added manpower.
But just remember, ineffective training won't help you. That's why you must include these 19 topics in your induction training.
