You can't afford to overlook your health and safety training obligations! Here's why...

by , 25 September 2014
Do you think health and safety training is a joke? Something to just shrug off because you think your employees will figure it out on their own.

If you do, we have some bad news for you. Your employees and your company are in serious danger.

Your health and safety training plays a very big role in your company's health and safety. You can't overlook its importance.

Here's why...

You can't overlook your health and safety training obligations

The first reason you can't overlook your health and safety obligations is because they're a legal requirement.

The OHS Act clearly states you have a legal obligation to give your employees OHS training. If you overlook this obligation and the DoL finds out, you'll face penalties, a company shutdown or even jail time.

This could put your entire company in danger because you disobeyed the law.

This is why you must give your employees safety training and document it with registers and certificates. This way, if a DoL inspector wants to take a look at your records, you can prove your fulfilled your OHS training obligation.

But there's another reason you need to give your employees this training.

Do you know what your OHSA duties are as an employer?

Do your employees know what their duties are?

Here's the second reason you must give your employees this training

Your employees need to know how to protect themselves. Health and safety training gives them the knowledge to do this.

Without it, they have to learn through trial and error and that means a lot of accidents will happen before your employees learn what not to do.

Rather give them all the information they need upfront so they never have to guess about how to work safely.

As you can see, health and safety training isn't something you can just forget about. Rather fulfil your obligations to protect your company and employees.

PS: We strongly recommend you check out the Health & Safety Training manual. It has five legally compliant safety training modules for less than R200 each!
