Beware of these five scams as you rush to submit your ITR12 before the November 21 deadline

According to SARS, you must beware of the following scams:

  • SARS eFiling SARS IT Account Request (IT34);
  • Confirm Tax Return;
  • Tax Returns processed;
  • Application for Tax Clearance Code/Certificate; and
  • VAT refund.

If you get an email with any of the above subject lines, don't open it. Delete it immediately as it highly likely it's from a fraudster who wants you to part with personal information such as your bank account details.

SARS makes it clear that it will never ask for your bank or personal details in any communication you receive via post, email, phone or SMS. It also won't send you hyperlinks to other websites – even those of banks.

The taxman also warns you to beware of people who offer to complete your tax return for you and promise they can get you a refund.

In fact, SARS urges you to report any emails you think are scams or phishing. You can do this by sending an email to phishing@sars.gov.za or calling the Fraud and Anti-Corruption Hotline (0800 00 2870).

Don't get taken for a ride. Beware of these scams as you rush to submit your Income Tax Return before the 21 November deadline.
