The answer to the question: 'Are part-time employees entitled to sick leave?' is a big, fat 'yes'.

costs South African companies a year. This is equal to the amount medical aids paid to suppliers in 2010.
And did you know R57million of that is from employees taking 'sick days' off purely because they just didn't feel like coming in to work?
The BCEA has the following to say on part-time employees and sick leave entitlement
The Labour Law for Managers Loose Leaf Service explains that part-time employees who work for more than 24 hours per month are entitled to paid sick leave.
How do you work this out?
The number of days your part-time employee works in a six-week period determines the number of paid sick leave days he can claim.
For example, if your part-time employee works for 12 days per six weeks, he'll have a sick leave entitlement of 12 days per sick leave cycle (i.e. 36 months of employment).
Keep in mind that if your employee works for various employers (you being one of them), he's entitled to claim pro-rata sick pay from each of you.
The number of hours this employee works per six-week period will determine the amount of paid sick leave that he'll be able to claim.
For example, let's say your waitress works eight hours per day, five days per week– but for five different employers. She'd be entitled to six days' sick leave per employer, per sick leave cycle.
The Loose Leaf Service explains that this situation would be different if your waitress worked for only for you and for less than 24 hours per month. In this case, she wouldn't be entitled to any sick leave.
Now that you know what the BCEA says about sick leave entitlement for part-time staff, make sure you comply.
