You have to conduct evaluations regularly.

The reasons?

You can't expect your employee to know intuitively whether she's performing to the standard you require if you don't do evaluations.

Evaluations provide a channel of communication between you and your employee in maintaining a satisfactory level of performance, say the experts at the Practical Guide to Human Resources Management.

The primary goal of an evaluation is to inform your employee of the extent to which she's meeting the standards of performance you've set. For this reason, you should conduct regular evaluations (perhaps half-yearly depending on the circumstances) and they should be as thorough as possible.

Please note that in certain instances it may be relatively simple to determine whether or not your employee is meeting the performance standard you require.

There may be clear indications of sub-standard performance, such as complaints from customers or from your employee's immediate superior. It'll often be this sort of report that will initiate an investigation into reasons for your employee's unsatisfactory performance.

But, there might be no official complaints about a particular employee's performance and, in these cases, evaluations are particularly important. Not only are they an invaluable management tool, they also provide you with an opportunity to remind your employee of what you expect from here.
