Three work-related factors that prevent employee well-being

Employee well-being is key to creating a productive workforce. But do you know there are certain factors that prevent employee well-being? Read on to find out what these are so you can protect your greatest asset: Your employees.

That's why you must eliminate any work-related factors that may prevent employee well-being.

#1: An environment where backstabbing and gossip are allowed

You need to create an environment that's conducive to raising problems.

How do you do this?

You must create an employee wellness policy.

You must link this policy with your existing grievance procedure. This'll help reduce tension in the workplace and enhance employee wellness.

You must also make provision in your policy for regular surveys that'll uncover grievances around victimisation, gossip and backstabbing.

#2: Stress

You must conduct stress management initiatives in your workplace and help your employees to cope with work-related stress.

Be warned: Failure to deal with work-related stress increasingly exposes you to the risk of litigation.

'The trend in the UK and the US is to sue companies for large sums in damages for work-related stress,' warns the Guide.

Personal stress-related illnesses are best dealt with in your Employee Assistance Programmes (EAP). Assisting employees to remove this stress buys loyalty and enhances your employee retention.

#3: An environment that allows discrimination

You must have a wellness programme that focuses on removing harassment, discrimination and victimisation.

Employees who constantly have to watch their backs and are preoccupied with where the next incident of harassment is coming from won't be able to focus on their work.

Your wellness policy must link in with your EAP.

Monitor your work environment using surveys and questionnaires to ensure all incidents of unfair discrimination are totally removed from your environment.

You must also constantly reinforce a zero-tolerance approach to unfair discrimination, which includes victimisation and harassment.

And your employees must know who to refer incidents to and be assured that their issues will be resolved.

Remember, your employees are your greatest asset.

If you have a healthier workforce, you'll achieve:

  • Increased productivity
  • A drop in absenteeism rates
  • Less health-benefit costs

So make sure you eliminate any factors that may prevent employee well-being.
