Mentoring is one of the most cost-effective and sustainable methods of fostering and developing talent within your company. Here are three mentoring approaches you can use in your company to ensure mentorship achieves what it sets out to.

Mentorship is a valuable vehicle, not only to develop your employees, but also to develop the leadership potential of the mentors and support a culture of learning in your company.

But, in many companies, mentorship programmes fail because they aren't properly executed to meet the company's objectives.

You can prevent this from happening to your company by simply using these mentorship approaches.

Three mentorship approaches your company can use

  1. Informal mentoring. Informal mentoring is a relationship that's formed and evolves naturally between two people without your company initiating or overseeing the process. If your company decides on informal mentoring, interested employees should be briefed about what it is, how important it is and how to go about establishing and making the best of a mentoring relationship.
  2. Facilitated mentorship. A facilitated mentorship is a structure and series of processes designed by your company to create effective mentorship relationships. This is meant to guide the desired behaviour change of employees involved and to evaluate the results for the mentees, the mentors and the organisation with the primary purpose of systematically developing the skills and leadership capabilities of the mentees.
  3. Peer mentorship. With peer mentorship, the mentor is a peer and not someone in a more senior position.
