It's your responsibility to minimise health-and-safety risks in the workplace as much as is reasonably possible. And one of the ways you can do that is to provide personal protective equipment (PPE) wherever necessary.
This seems straightforward enough. But it doesn't stop there because you have a responsibility to monitor its usage.
So once you've identified any hazards in the workplace, and you've provided your employees with PPE, you have to carry out the following 5 steps to ensure you're effectively monitoring PPE in your workplace...

Designate the areas where PPE has to be worn and make sure mandatory signs are clearly displayed.
For example, if you have an area in the workplace where noise levels exceed the decibel (db) threshold, namely 85db, then hearing protection is required.
So you must have a blue sign with a picture of white ear-muffs on a head band clearly displayed at all entrances to the area.
Ensure that everyone in the designated area has the correct PPE and wears it all the time.
You can ensure this through various tactics. One of them has to do with simply leading by example.
In other words, if you, as the manager were to walk into an area that requires hearing protection, and you didn't wear any, it would create a precedent for all the staff they don't really have to wear PPE in designated areas.
Make complying with the correct use of PPE a key performance indicator (KPI) for all staff.
In other words, you should qauntify an employee's performance based partly on their PPE usage. And if they fail to wear their PPE consistentlly, they can be seen as performing poorly in the workplace.
This is especially true for supervisors. Becasue if they fail to wear their PPE consistently, they can indirectly encourage bad PPE practices among other workers.
Any visitors who visit designated areas must have relevant PPE readily available for them.
