Here's how to stop your employees from stealing or losing their PPE by doing this

by , 25 August 2014
Because personal protective equipment isn't the kind of safety equipment you can't tie down, there's always the chance employees could walk off with it.

When this happens, it costs you more money because you have to pay to replace it. And sadly, you legally can't make your employees pay for any PPE they lose, steal or break.

This means the only way to protect your PPE, and your bottom line, is to stop your employees from wandering off with your PPE all together. Here's how...

Here's how to ensure your employees don't steal or lose their PPE

Create a space, in your workplace, where your employees can store their PPE. This stops employees from taking it home and losing it in the process.
It also ensures you can keep track of who has what PPE by regularly doing spot checks on their PPE storage area to see what they have in there.
But how does this stop your employees from stealing the PPE?
*********** Hot off the press  ************
Do you have more than 20 employees?
Don't ignore this health and safety obligation or else!
The DoL will slap you with a R50 000 fine or 1 year in jail if you don't have a health and safety representative.

Here's how this measure stops your employees from stealing your PPE

PPE can be expensive so your employees could try stealing it to sell for a bit of extra cash. But by having an onsite storage area and making your employees sign their PPE in and out of this area each day, you can ensure employees don't leave with their PPE.
You can also do checks as your employees leave for the night to ensure none of them have any of their protective clothing on them.
This will help you protect your company's bottom line as you won't have to constantly replace this missing safety gear. All you need is an extra room with lockers or storage bins for each employee.
