To ensure their PPE doesn't get damaged, make sure your employees do THIS

by , 27 August 2014
Your employees are responsible for their personal protective equipment (PPE). If they lose or break it, you can discipline them, but you can't make them pay for it.

Your employees won't want to go through a long disciplinary process. But they may not know what do to or what not to do when it comes to their PPE.

That's why you must give them clear training on the use of their safety gear. As part of that training, you must include this one thing to ensure their PPE doesn't get damaged...

The one thing you must tell your employees to do to protect their PPE

To ensure your employees' PPE doesn't get damaged, they must store it correctly. You must train your employees on how and where to store their PPE.

This way, their PPE isn't in the way and it won't get kicked, stood on or broken.

But it's not enough to just tell them where to keep it, you must give them somewhere to keep it too.

Do you have more than 20 employees?

Don't ignore this health and safety obligation or else!

The DoL will slap you with a R50 000 fine or 1 year in jail if you don't have a health and safety representative.

Here's where your employees must store their PPE on site

Give your employees a storage space where they can put their PPE at the end of the day. Get them to sign their PPE in and out and tell your safety officer to inspect it as they put it back. This way you can monitor the condition of their safety gear.

You must train your employees on how to store their PPE in this area. Give them their own lockers or areas where they can store things.

If your employees do this, their protective clothing will be out of harm's way and that means it'll last MUCH longer. So give them the right training on how to store their PPE.
