Asking the right questions in an interview is an art. If you're not asking the right kind of questions about a candidate's qualification, you're not going to get the information you need to make the best choice. At the end of the day, that means you're wasting your time. Here are a few job interview question suggestions to help you get the information that you need.

14 job interview questions that'll help you discover more about a candidate's education

When conducting interviews, you should ask question about a candidate's tertiary education and/or school education. For most positions tertiary education will be very important.
Here are some suggested questions for interview about:

Tertiary education
1. What qualification have you completed?
2. What made you want to study that?
3. I see you studied one thing but now you work in a different area. Why the change of direction?
4. What year did you finish your studies in?
5. What institution did you study at?
6. Did you study full-time or part-time or through correspondence?
7. Why didn't you finish your studies?
8. Did you start your studies straight after school?
9. Did you study close to home to did you relocate to study?
- If yes ask why.
These questions are great for candidates who finished their studies and have been working for a while.
However, you might not always be interviewing an older candidate. If the position isn't particularly skilled you may interview a younger candidate with less experience.

Here are examples of interview questions to ask candidates who are younger about their:
School education
1. What high school did you go to?
2. What was the highest grade you passed?
3. Why didn't you finish school?
4. Why did you choose to finish school at your college or trade school?
5. What year did finish school in?
According to the Practical Guide for Human Resource Managers these questions work best when you're interviewing a young candidate. This is because they may not have studied further yet so their school education is all you can ask about.
There you have it. Proof that you can get very relevant information about how the candidate deals with work without asking competency based questions. You can simply use these job interview questions.
