But how do you do this?

Here's how to attract and retain employees

According to the Practical Guide to Human Resources Management, if you provide the following you'll be sure to attract and retain key staff:

  • Career growth, learning and development.
  • Exciting work and challenges.
  • Meaningful work, making a difference and a contribution.
  • Great people
  • Being part of a team
  • A good boss
  • Recognition for work well done
  • Fun on the job
  • Autonomy, a sense of control over my work
  • Flexibility, for example, in work hours and dress code
  • Fair pay and benefits
  • Inspiring leadership
  • Pride in the company, its mission and quality of product
  • A great work environment
  • Job security
  • A family-friendly culture
  • Cutting-edge technology

Don't make the mistake of believing what attracts one employee is the standard for what attracts all employees.

Some employees don't want a career-path and aren't excited about new technology, while others are very ambitious and won't work for a company that doesn't have the latest cutting-edge equipment.

That's why it's important to audit your own environment regularly. Have a retention questionnaire where you ask your employees what attracted them and what will make them stay.

If you find that the work environment is no longer happy, make sure you find out the cause of the unhappiness. You must do this regularly and not as a once-off exercise. After all, things change all the time in the workplace.
