Do the following to create a comfortable interview environment

Experts behind the Practical Guide to Human Resources Management advise you to do the following to build a comfortable interview environment:

  • Introduce yourself and shake hands with the applicant;

  • Smile and be friendly;

  • Maintain eye contact, use the correct body language and keep a friendly tone of voice. Remember, first impressions count. If the applicant feels comfortable, he'll open up, be more honest and provide invaluable information;

  • Once you settle down, explain the purpose of the interview. Explain to the applicant that you'll ask questions about his experience, training, background, interests, goals, values and ambitions;

  • Let the applicant know more about the position and your company; and

  • Listen, pay attention, don't judge and be genuinely interested in what the applicant has to say.

While these actions might seem small, they go a long way towards easing the applicant's nerves and getting him to open up. This way, the interview will be more fruitful.
