Five background checks you must do before you hire John

You'll only find out if John is right for the job if you conduct thorough background checks. These days employees lie to get the job, so you need to verify everything. After all, the last thing you want is to find out down the line is that John faked his degree.
So, before you hire him, you need to ensure his CV is correct by doing these five background checks:
  1. ID number verification;
  2. Driver's licence verification;
  3. Criminal record checks;
  4. Credit checks; and
  5. Qualification verification.
Bear in mind that you can only do these checks if they're relevant to the job John will be doing. In addition, you must get John's consent to do these background checks.
Because conducting background checks isn't straight forward (you must know how to conduct them legally), we recommend you check out the Practical Guide to Human Resources Management. It will give you a breakdown of how to go about doing these checks in a legal manner so you can avoid finding yourself at the CCMA or Labour Court.
Doing these five checks will help ensure John is the right person for the job.
