Planing to conduct a risk assessment in your workplace? If so, here are two tips you MUST use to conduct your assessment effectively.

Tip #1: Record your findings and implement them

Putting the results of your risk assessment into practice will make a difference when looking after people and your business, says the Health and Safety Executive.

That's why it's important to write down the results of your risk assessment so you can share them with your employees.

When writing down your results, keep it simple. The Health and Safety Executive says you need to be able to show that:

  • A proper check was made;
  • You asked who might be affected;
  • You dealt with all the obvious significant hazards, taking into account the number of people who could be involved;
  • The precautions are reasonable and the remaining risk is low; and
  • You involved your staff or their representatives in the process.

Tip #2: Review your risk assessment and update if necessary

Workplaces change all the time. You might, for example, bring in new equipment or procedures that could lead to new hazards.

The Health and Safety Executive says that's why it makes sense for you to review what you're doing on an ongoing basis. Be proactive, don't take action when something has gone wrong and when it's too late.

The site recommends you look at your risk assessment and think about whether there have been any changes? Are there improvements you still need to make? Have your workers spotted a problem? Have you learnt anything from accidents or near misses?

Basically, if there's a significant change during the year, 'check your risk assessment and where necessary, amend it. If possible, it's best to think about the risk assessment when you're planning your change – that way you leave yourself more flexibility,' adds the Health and Safety Executive.

Important: The Health and Safety Advisor stresses the importance of doing risk assessments. It says, by identifying the risks, you'll be able to take preventative and precautionary measures to minimise or prevent any health and safety hazards that could harm to your employees.
