Is your workplace a war zone? Here's how to deal with it

Do your employees face danger every day? If they do they probably feel like they're in a war zone; avoiding workplace accidents as if they're landmines.

If this is the case, then you've failed to fulfil your legal duty to protect them as their employer.

You can, however, change this situation around. All you need to do is target the enemy: Those risks! You must find them and neutralise them.

This is the only way to make your workplace safe. Here's how to do it...

The DoL will slap you with a R50 000 fine or 1 year in jail if you don't have a health and safety representative. 

If you want a safe workplace, you MUST do a risk assessment

The only way to beat those risks is to identify them and target them. The only way you can do this is to do a risk assessment. 
So arrange a time with your health and safety representative to observe your employees at work. 
You need to examine the work your employees do and the machinery and tools they use. 
You must then record all of the risks you identify in your risk register so you can deal with them after the risk assessment.

Target the risks you've identified and deal with them

It's not enough to just know what risks your employees face. You must now take a targeted approach to dealing with and removing them from your workplace. 
To do this, you must take the findings of your risk assessment to your health and safety committee meeting and discuss them. Together with your committee, you must all agree on how to remove these risks from your workplace.
This process of assessing and removing risks in the best way you can turn your war-zone-workplace into a safe one that even the DoL will approve of.
