You must conduct a Hazard Identification and Risk Assessment (HIRA) process in your company.

Why?

Conducting a hazard identification and risk assessment process will help you achieve the following:

  • Recognise and control hazards and exposures in your workplace.

Essentially, by identifying the risks, you'll be able to take preventative and precautionary measures to minimise or prevent any harm to your employees.

Remember, to effectively identify hazards and assess risks in the workplace, you'll need the assistance of all the employees working in the facility. One person can't have all the knowledge of the hazards and risks associated with all the processes and procedures performed in the facility; neither the health, safety and environment coordinator, nor risk manager can do this alone

In terms of the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA), you and your employee are responsible for health and safety aspects on site.

Important: The process doesn't stop with the identification and assessment of hazards and risks.

Once you've completed the first part of the process, take risk management actions. Through awareness and training, you'll ensure compliance to risk management requirements and a high level of system effectiveness.
