Don't have time to go to a SARS branch to find out why it hasn't paid your Vat refund? Here's a more convenient method to use

by , 06 February 2015
If you're due a Vat refund, SARS must pay it over within 21 business days of lodging your return. If it doesn't, you can go to your local SARS branch to follow up on your payment and ask for interest.

But what if you simply don't have the time to physically go to SARS? After all, you have a business to run.

Use the following method - it's fast and more convenient...

Do this if you can't go to SARS to ask about your Vat refund

If you can't go to SARS to follow up on your Vat refund, use the 'refund dashboard' link on your eFiling profile. This will tell you where your refund is in the process.
With this method, you can do everything from the comfort of your office.
In this article, we explain that all you have to do is:
  • Log onto the eFiling Vat section;
  • Click on 'returns' in the top menu;
  • On the left-hand side, select 'Vat Maintenance' and then 'refund dashboard';
  • The 'refund dashboard' page will display your registration details and a tax period search function;
  • Once you select a tax period, you'll see in a table format;
  1. The tax period;
  2. Amount of the refund as per the Vat return;
  3. A description of any issue affecting the refund; and
  4. A colour-coded indicator that, at a glance, tells you your refund status. (Red means you need to take action, e.g. submit documents. Amber means SARS is in the process of completing its audit. And green means everything is in order, you'll get your refund soon.)
But that's not all when it comes to Vat refunds…

Do your Vat refund in ten simple steps

Calculate your Vat, submit your Vat return form and get your refund back from SARS without any delays when you follow this ten-step action plan.

Keep this info in mind when it comes to checking the status of your refund

If, after checking the status of your refund, you discover SARS is the one causing the delay, you have a right to demand interest. SARS calculates the interest per day from the 22nd day of business following the submission of your return. You can find out the official rate SARS uses to calculate interest on its website.
BUT, if you're the one causing the delay, you won't get any interest.
Play it safe by making sure SARS has your correct banking details so it can facilitate smooth refunds. Also make sure you have documentary proof to verify the Vat refund in case SARS asks for it.
Lastly, keep all your tax affairs and payments up-to-date to ensure smooth payment of your refund. SARS won't pay your Vat refund if you have other outstanding tax issues, such as not paying your personal income tax, employee's tax or owing money to Customs!
There you have it: If you don't have time to go to SARS to find out why it's not paid your Vat refund, simply use the 'refund dashboard'.
