What to do when you've responded to SARS 201 Vat letter

by , 13 May 2015
You're partially off the hook because you've responded to SARS' Vat 201 letter, informing them that you've done what they asked from you and send them the documents they requested, together with your short letter informing them that you found or didn't find an error.

What's the next step?

You must monitor your eFiling profile and SARS to find out the next steps on your Vat 201 debacle

There are three possible scenarios:

1. SARS will often re-issue the pop-up letter, saying it hasn't received anything from you;
2. If the return was a refund, SARS might just pay the money into your bank account; or
3. SARS may request more information and/or raise an assessment.

Let's take a look at each of these scenarios.

1. SARS re-issues the letter

In this case, you must upload your same documents again, or take these copies to SARS.

TIP: Make a new screen grab proving this upload. Or, get your documents stamped again at the SARS office and get the official's business card!

Keep checking your Inbox and eFiling profile to see if SARS has dealt with the return. SARS issues a letter if the audit is complete and it's satisfied.

Getting your VAT refund from SARS just got harder…

A small administrative mistake is all it takes for SARS to have the right to withhold your refund.

Put a simple zero in the wrong place on the new VAT return could and you can forget about getting even a cent of your money back.

Make sure this never happens to you by filling in the new VAT return 100% correctly every, single time.

I'll show you how here.

2. SARS pays your Vat refund into your bank account

If it does this, you can safely assume SARS is happy with what you've given it.

3. SARS requests more information and/or raises an assessment

Once SARS has made a written request for the information, submit your documents.

Now SARS will review your information. This is called a desk audit, where a SARS official will review your documents electronically. Important: SARS must keep you informed of what's happening! This is where it falls short. And most vendors don't follow up on SARS.

Finally, keep in mind that you have a right to respond to SARS in respect of its findings within 21 business days. (Paragraph (3), Section 42 of the Tax Administration Act).
