Consider these three crucial rules when choosing an emergency exit point

If there's an emergency in your workplace, you and your employees must get out fast. You need emergency exits so everyone knows where they must go.

You need to select the exits your employees must use as emergency exits. But you need to consider certain criteria when you do to ensure you choose exits that are easy to get out of.

Follow these three crucial rules to ensure you choose the right ones...

 

Need an emergency exit point? Follow these three rules to choose the right one

 
Rule #1: It must be accessible 
 
Emergency exits must be easily accessible. If your employees have to go through a door at the back of a cluttered cupboard to get out, no one will get out safely.
 
Your emergency exit must be in an open area anyone can get to without needing to go through hundreds of doors or climbing over clutter.
 
Rule #2: It must have a wide doorway and exit route
 
If your exit door and stairway are narrow, it will make it difficult for your employees to get out quickly. The limited space could result in people either getting stuck in the panic or having to exit extremely slowly. Either situation puts them in serious danger.

Rule #3: The exit must have a clear path outside
 
If the exit forces employees to go through long passages or other work areas, your employees will take longer to leave the building. This again puts them is danger because they can't get out fast enough. 
 
Your exit must lead directly to the outside of the building so your employees can get to the emergency assembly point as fast as possible. 
 
If you follow these three rules your emergency exit will effectively help employees escape any workplace emergency.
