Create organisational citizenship with these four steps and enhance health and safety in the workplace

As an employer, it is your duty to ensure that all employees are adhering to health and safety regulations.

One of the ways you can achieve this is by implementing an employment-driven safety system.

Introducing an employment-driven safety system in a successful manner can not only establish a correct environment, but it can also encourage 'extra-role behaviour' in the workplace. In the process, you can
create a sense of 'organisational citizenship'.

Here are four steps to creating organisational citizenship among your employees:

1. Lay out your company's business and safety vision

Get together focus groups from all levels and prepare your company's vision statement.

Once this has been done, you should communicate it with all other employees and display it for all to see. 

2. Lay out Health and Safety objectives

Make an effort to perform a baseline assessment of the current culture in the workplace and ensure that your health and safety objectives fall in line with your vision.

Employees think that safety is something 'management' must do. They're wrong. Employees also have duties to comply with the OHS Act.

It's your responsibility to make sure your employees comply. Don't know how to do it? 
3. Enhance health and safety leadership

Identify cultural gaps and perform an analysis on sustaining systems in your company. 

Also, identify a safety leadership team, arrange vision workshops and provide coaching for all leaders.

The same can be done for all levels of management.

4. Employee engagement

Get employees engaged by introducing a system of peer-on-peer observation to measure the levels of exposure between employees and the workplace. 

Through direct exposure and discussions with employees, you can capture all levels of exposure and take action to remove any barriers.

So, there were four very practical steps to encouraging a sense of organisational citizenship among your employees. 

Remember that by sing so you can create a workforce that take health and safety to heart. And in so doing, they will greatly reduce any incidents in the workplace.
