Do you have forklift drivers in your company? Ensure they have this document

by , 13 November 2014
Mining, industrial, manufacturing and farming industries all rely on vehicles or small machines like forklifts to transport goods and supplies around their premises.

If you're in one of these industries, you'll know what a large part forklifts play. But did you know you have to ensure these drivers have a particular document?

This document ensures they need to know what they're doing and how to handle a forklift to do this job.

So, if you have forklift drivers in your company, read on to discover what document they must have to do this job...

Your forklift drivers need this document to do their job

Your small vehicle drivers will need a licence for the type of vehicle they're driving as stated in the Driven Machinery Regulations.

It must be the same as the class of vehicle they use. You'll also need to check they're medically fit before they can get the licence.

So before you let any of your employees drive a small machine or vehicle in your workplace, ensure they have the right licence to do so.

But if you want them to do their job safely, you should also help them get this type of licence too.

Do you comply with the Hazardous Chemical Regulations?

There are over 1 500 items you must evaluate in your workplace according to the OHS Act and hundreds more from SABS 0400: National Building regulations.

This type of drivers licence will also help keep your employees safe when they handle their forklifts

An advanced drivers licence, although meant for normal road vehicles, can benefit your drivers. The training they need to get this licence can teach them how to react quickly and safely to dangerous driving situations. For example, if they lose control of the forklift, they'll know what to do to stop it safely.

Ensure your forklift drivers this document so you know they can do their job safely and don't cause any dangers in your workplace.
