by , 09 December 2014
Every day around the world, employees have accidents at work or contract diseases. These accidents and diseases destroy lives and some even take them away completely.

Sadly, as Lauran Applebey, a construction health and safety expert from the UK, puts it many of these accidents are preventable through simple actions.

Because the truth about health and safety is that small actions can have a massive impact. They really do prevent accidents and save lives.

So, if you think health and safety is all about spending huge amounts of money and investing massive effort, you're wrong.

You can effectively protect your employees with simple, smart safety actions and today, I'm going to show you how...

*********** Reader's choice  ***************
Three tips to get your employees to comply with health and safety laws
Employees think that safety is something 'management' must do. They're wrong. Employees also have duties to comply with the OHS Act.
It's your responsibility to make sure your employees comply. Don't know how to do it?

These six simple safety actions can protect your employees at work

Action 1: Brief your employees on health and safety every morning. Do this in short, before work meetings, where you remind employees about safety and raise any important safety issues.
Use these meetings to make your employees aware of the dangers at work. If your employees are more aware, they'll be more careful. It's an easy way to prevent accidents and keep your employees safe.
Action 2: Keep your safety equipment in good condition. Simply inspect and maintain your safety equipment to ensures it's safe to use. This prevents accidents that happen because of malfunctioning machinery.
Something as simple as a loose wire in a machine can cause a devastating accident. But fixing it is simple.

Will you land in hot water when the DoL comes to inspect your site? Or will your site be one of the few deemed 100% compliant?
Action 3: Enforce health and safety rules constantly. Yes, your employees may roll their eyes at your repeated statements about health and safety, but as long as they obey your rules, they can roll their eyes all they like.
Be clear about the consequences of breaking your health and safety rules. And don't forget to be consistent - treat every broken rule the same way.
Action 4: Regularly assess your workplace risks. If you understand them, you can prevent them. For example, understanding that you have a high risk of falling off scaffolding in strong winds will help you prevent accidents.
Because risks change and evolve, do a risk assessment every few months to keep your knowledge of them up-to-date.
Action 5: Give your employees personal protective equipment (PPE). This is one of the easiest ways to prevent accidents AND it's a legal requirement under the OHS Act.
Even though PPE should be a last resort, it's still one of the best ways to prevent accidents.
Action 6: Training your employees regularly through toolbox talks. This keeps your employees' knowledge of how to protect themselves fresh and relevant.

These six actions are simple and they don't take a lot of time or money to implement. But they will easily reduce risks and stop accidents from happening.
So don't delay! Take these health and safety actions today to protect your employees.
