Protecting your employees at work isn't hard when you remember this one rule

by , 27 August 2014
When it comes to protecting your employees at work, you can sometimes feel like a nursery school teacher. You have to chase employees - like children - all over the place and shout at them to stop misbehaving.

If this is the case, it means you did something wrong when you created your health and safety plan. You see, an important part of health and safety is giving your employees the tools to protect themselves.

So instead of acting like a nanny in your own workplace, follow this one rule to keep your employees safe...

This one rule will help keep your employees safe

The rule of workplace health and safety is: Give your employees the power and ability to protect themselves.
This means you must give them the tools and the knowledge to protect themselves against the risks they face.
Otherwise, you'll have to follow them around and constantly correct their behaviour. This is ineffective and counterproductive as your employees will eventually stop listening.
So give your employees these four things so they have the power to protect themselves.

Do you know what your OHSA duties are as an employer?
Do your employees know what their duties are?

These are the four things you must give your employees so they can protect themselves

Give your employees:
1. OHS training. This will give them the knowledge to protect themselves;
2. Personal protective equipment (PPE). This will help your employees protect themselves against injuries;
3. A health and safety representative. Their HSE rep will act as their voice and can tell you what else you need to give your employees; and
4. Safety procedural manuals. Your employees can check on the procedures they must follow so they can stay safe.
If you follow this one rule and give your employees these things to protect themselves, you'll never have to be a workplace nanny again.
