Revealed: Nine elements of work that could contribute to substance abuse

by , 07 October 2013
Alcohol and drug abuse can cause huge expenses for your business. From lost productivity to injuries and increases in health claims, substance abuse is a huge problem. That's why it's crucial that you're aware of certain factors of work that may contribute to substance abuse so you can eliminate them.

'No business, regardless of size or location is immune to the countless problems that drug abuse can cause,' says the Health&Safety Advisor.

The Advisor adds that while there may be commonalities in the occupations of people who abuse substances, the fact that a job has certain characteristics doesn't mean your employee will begin to abuse substances.

Various personal and social factors play a major role.

Work-related factors that may lead to substance abuse include:

  1. High stress;
  2. Low job satisfaction;
  3. Long hours or irregular shifts;
  4. Fatigue;
  5. Repetitious duties;
  6. Periods of inactivity or boredom;
  7. Isolation;
  8. Remote or irregular supervision; and
  9. Easy access to substances.

But it's not all doom and gloom. You can address substance abuse in your workplace with a Drug-free Workplace Policy and a substance abuse programme.

Just remember that your organisation's policy must be unique and tailored to meet your company's specific needs.

The policy can be drawn up between you, your staff, your company's Health and Safety Representatives or bargaining council.

Sharing all policies with your employees is essential for success. This way you can be certain that all your employees are aware of the policy and Drug-free Workplace Programme.

This will go a long way in ensuring that you eliminate work-related factors that may lead to substance abuse.
