Speed is everything during a workplace disaster! Don't let these four things slow you down

by , 11 September 2014
The moment you hear the emergency alarm in your business go off, you need to get moving.

You need to get your employees out, call emergency services and deal with injuries A.S.A.P.

If you don't, you could lose everything in the blink of an eye.

The trouble is, there are so many things that can slow you down and turn that workplace emergency into a real disaster.

To prevent this from happening, ensure these four things don't slow you down...

Four things you must avoid during an emergency or they'll slow you down
1. Confused employees
If your employees are confused and don't know what to do in an emergency, it'll slow the whole process down.
So train all your employees on what to do during an emergency beforehand. This way they'll all know exactly how to respond when they hear your alarm.
2. Poor emergency procedures
If you haven't drawn up your emergency procedures properly you and your employees won't know exactly what to do.
You must carefully draw up this document so everyone knows what to do, where to go, who's in charge and when to do things.
*********** Hot off the press  ************
Do you have more than 20 employees?
Don't ignore this health and safety obligation or else!
The DoL will slap you with a R50 000 fine or 1 year in jail if you don't have a health and safety representative.
3. Workplace clutter
If your workplace is full of clutter, it'll stop everyone getting out the emergency exits quickly.
You must clear the pathway to all of your emergency exits and keep it that way. This ensures employees can get out easily.
4. Panic
If you and your employees panic and lose your cool, it'll slow down everything. They may forget what to do and just freeze in terror.
You can overcome this by getting employees to help each other and using easy to remember safety acronyms
These four things could cost you valuable seconds. Ensure you're prepared so they don't.
