A health and safety committee is a forum for discussing health and safety issues.
They are held between health and safety representatives and management representatives.
The purpose of the committee is to initiate, develop, maintain, promote and review the health and safety programme.
Now, there are four duties that you as the employer have when it comes to health and safety committees.
Decide on the number of health and safety committee members;

Attend every health and safety committee meeting; and
Ensure that health and safety committees meet at least once every three months. This is according to Section 19 of the Occupational Health and Safety Act.
It very important to note that in terms of numbers there may NOT be more management representatives present at health and safety committee meetings than there are health and safety representatives. But there may be the same amount of management representatives as there are health and safety representatives.
