Excel Tip 1: How to format cells, columns and rows in Excel

Every office relies on Excel for some business function. So we've decided to send you a series of Excel tips to help you streamline this. These range from easy tips that just make your life easier, to more advanced and complex tips.

Today's Excel tip forms part of the more basic Excel tips. But keep a look out for more advanced tips in the coming weeks.

Excel Tip 1: How to format cells, columns and rows in Excel

All Excel reports should be easy to read. So if you want to change the layout of the entire spreadsheet, you can use cell, row and column formatting options.

Cell formatting changes the appearance of characters within the cell (colour, font, size etc.), and the appearance of the cells (frame, colour etc).

Formatting rows and columns is when you choose the height and width, and what (and how) to insert and delete.

But how do you view the text that isn't visible?

One of five ways to view all the text

To get an automatic best fit simply double click the column break line between the two cells you want to format.
You can also do this for the entire row:
•    Double click on the line between the two columns at the top of the sheet.
•    If you click on the number 'A', you'll select the whole column. This will show as a highlighted column.
•    Then double-click on the line next the letter to autoformat the column width to the automatic best fit. This will match the printing properties you've selected.
