If you provide staff meals, you must take the necessary steps to prevent the spread of diseases.
The Health & Safety Advisor says 'through induction orientation, regular meetings with your staff and training, managers have the ability to ensure a high standard of hygiene.'
Apply these seven steps in your health and safety management system if you provide staff meals
Step 1: Insist on good hygiene practice of your employees.
Step 2: Train and supervise employees in the safe handling of food. Here are 14 good hygiene practices your food handlers can use when preparing food.
Step 3: Ensure employees have a good understanding of the principles of hygiene.
Step 4: Advise employees of their obligation to report any infectious or potentially infectious conditions.
Step 5: Temporarily exclude infectious or potentially infectious food handlers from working with food.
Step 6: Ensure that visitors to the canteen or kitchen don't contaminate the food or work areas.
Step 7: Ensure regular medical examination and biological monitoring of your food handlers.
Warning: If your facilities and the food your provide causes harm to your employees in any way, you could be fined, sentenced to prison, and even lose your business. Don't take that risk.
Remember, providing healthy food, clean facilities and nutritionally designed meals is as important to your employees as protecting them from chemicals and noise.
So make sure you implement these seven steps in your health and safety management system if you provide staff meals.
