Avoid these four consequences by protecting your employees' data

by , 22 January 2014
As an employer, you must keep your employees' records safe. You have a duty to protect the information that's in your care. This is according to the Protection of Personal Information Act (POPI). If you don't protect this information from hackers who can access it on the internet and cloud, it could be open season on your employees' data.

Let's take a look at a few of these consequences you'll face if you don't keep your employees' data safe...

Avoid these four consequences by protecting your employees' data
  1. Avoid a bad company reputation. If you don't protect your employees' information properly, it could create the impression that you aren't worried about their safety. This means you won't attract new talent to your company.  And if your clients find out there's a security breach in your company, they'll lose confidence in you.
  2. Avoid fines up to R 10 million or 10 years in jail. This can happen, according to the Protection of Personal Information Act or POPI. This means you'll have serious financial losses and time away from your business. Not to mention the possibility of going to jail.

Two more consequences  to avoid…
  1. Stop your employee and company's data falling into the wrong hands. You probably use one type of security measure for your company. So when you expose your employees' data to risk, you also expose your company's proprietary information since they're on the same system. If people can illegally access one, they'll find a back door and access your entire system.
  2. Avoid poor work performance from distressed employees. If your employee's information falls into the hands of the wrong people, there's a sense of intrusion and violation. This is because a stranger has access to all their personal information like their address, ID numbers and bank information, etc. This can affect how they perform and concentrate at work.
Put security measures in place to stop this happening to your company.  Look out for the next update of the Practical Guide to Human Resources Management coming out this February. We have a whole chapter on HR Data and Security. In it we'll show you 13 ways to protect the HR data that's in your care. Not a subscriber of the Practical Guide to Human Resources Management?
